Federal regulators now believe U.S. bank failures will cost the deposit insurance fund more than $40 billion over the next four years as the economy weakens, a government official said Tuesday.

The small businesses sector in December suffered its largest one-month jobs decline in at least a decade, according to an employment report by payroll processor ADP, which estimates that small companies shed 281,000 jobs last month.

Two years after opening, Progress West HealthCare Center in O’Fallon, Mo., will expand with a new medical office building that will bring more general physicians and specialists to south St. Charles County.

European finance officials are focused on reviving the banking system to boost lending and help companies and consumers survive the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

Borrowing was slightly less expensive Monday after Britain unveiled a new bank rescue plan aimed at increasing the availability of credit and boosting bank lending. Under the plan, the British Treasury will set up an insurance program, called the Asset Protection Scheme. The program will attempt to protect banks against further losses and guarantee bank assets backed by mortgages and other loans.

Lee Enterprises Inc., publisher of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, said Friday it received another waiver extension on loan requirements related to the $306 million in debt it took on when it bought the Post-Dispatch in 2005.
